6 Tips to getting that first BRAND NEW BIKE from the dealer PDF Print E-mail

So you have ridden around on your beaten up learner bike, and feel like motorcycling is for you, and you are ready to get your first brand new bike.  Here are six tips to help you get the most out of your first bike buy.  We'll start by talking sticker price, but that is just the first step in a successful purchase.

1.  Typically you can count on 15%-20% markup.  This will help you get a good haggling price range to start at.

2.  Unless you have to have the current model in January, wait until the end of the year, they will be more willing to haggle because they will need to get that bike out of there.

3.  Alway remember a dealership will have various state fees, dealership fees, and the like.  Always remember unless you say "Out the Door pricing" they will not calculate those fees into the cost, and you will see an extra $500-1000 bucks on your invoice.

4.  Don't  forget to ask for a setup for free when you buy the bike.  They normally will include this ONLY IF YOU ASK.  They will adjust the pegs, levers, and suspension to your liking.  If you feel you can do that on your own, ask for extras.  In paticular with sportbikes, ask for a crash kit (Frame Sliders, Swing Arm Sliders/Spools, bar ends).  Some other ideas for extras are, first service free, or a discount on gear.  Just remember if you ask for more stuff, near the end of negotiatons, expect them to say they are going to need to adjust the price. 

5.  Lastly don't get too impatient, and just agree with the dealer.  Just like buying a car, getting up and walking out is a powerful bargaining tool, especially if sales are down, and they need to get rid of bikes at the end of the year.

6.  One more thing, SHOP AROUND, as a 50-100 mile trip can save you $1,000 bucks on the bike of your choice.
